Britains First Issue Of Decimal Coins

The Advent of Decimalisation in Britain

By Michael Lee

Published 28th October 2010

The Royal Mint issued a staggering 1521666250 1p coins in 1971, highlighting the scale of the changes that were about to take place. These new coins were part of the introduction of a decimal currency system in Britain, which replaced the old system of pounds, shillings, and pence. This was a major change for the country, and it took some time for people to get used to the new system.
